Q: Bought a used car that is a lemon?
I recently bought a 2009 pontiac G6. This was a gm certified car that came with the bumper to bumper warranty as well as preventive maintenance for a year. I bought the car in Feb 2010. I brought the car back in April 2010 because the cylinder was misfiring, They replaced the spark plug. I brough the car back in June 2010 for the same thing they replaced spark plug 2. I brought the car back in August 2010 for the same problem again. They replaced the fuel injectors. I brought the car back three days later and left it with them for 14 days. They flushed the transmission and cleaned the injectors. I brought the car back 2 days later and they have had my car for a week with no idea what the problem is.

What can i do? I live in the state of Illinois I am pretty sure that lemon law does not apply to used cars but because I have a warranty does that change things? I have opened a ticket with GM and will probably contact my attorney shortly.
just additional info: I am not paying a dime for these repairs this is fully covered. The problem is coming in the inconvience of not having my car. They did indeed give me a rental. However, I am driving out of state this weekend which is the reason for my growing impatience.

A: they replaced the injectors and 3 days later they cleaned them? It sounds like the dealer has no idea what their are doing lol. Sorry to hear that. Thank god you have a warranty. Maybe try a different dealer?

Q: Lemon Law Buyback??? I bought a used car….. found THAT on the title AFTERwards….?
I bought a used car (2006 Pontiac GTO) about two months ago and JUST recently found out that the title has a lemon law/manufacturer buyback on it. It was a defect in the paint supposedly. It claims that the defect was remedied, then sold at auction…….

then over the course of the past year it has been retitled, but the lemon law thing still pops up……..

SHOULD the dealer have told me about this in WRITING when I purchased the car, or have they gone against the law???? (I’m from Illinois)…… I’ve been reading here and there that if a car was previously bought back because of a defect/lemon law that it should be presented to you in writing at the time of sale if the car gets resold later. The dealership never told me ANYTHING!

Am I able to do something about this, like take the dealership to court or have them buy it back or something???

A: The dealer should have had you sign a buy back statement that the manufacturer provided them. This form describes the problem and the remedy along with time and miles in which the buy back occurred. You may have actually signed this without realizing what you were signing among everything else you had to sign that day.
Basically, the good news is that the manufacturer took the car back to the factory to fix the paint issue which should no longer be a problem. Also, there is no need to further inform anyone else that the car had been a buy back.
As far as the dealer is concerned, they should have disclosed this to you at the time of sale. If they cannot produce the document, contact the manufacturer. You do have recourse.

A: For you to be able to do anything, you would have to show two things:

(1) They had a legal obligation to tell you.

(2) You have suffered real damages because of that failure.

Q: Buying a car, how much will title transfer and all that cost?
So I’m going to buy a used car and I was just wondering how much it will cost for me to legally drive it? Not including insurance.

I live in Illinois and I’m 16 years old, if that matters. I’ve checked the DMV site and it’s kind of confusing so I figured I might be able to get a quick answer here.

Thanks!

A: Don’t forget sales tax.

I usually figure $150 for title/registration, etc.

A: He is looking for the imaginary car. That type of vehicle does not really exist. You might be able to get a used Kia that fits that criteria. That is about it.

****EDIT****

When I went to Autotrader.com and looked for cars that fit your criteria within 50 miles of your ZIP code, nothing showed to be available

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/searchresults.jsp?num_records=25&search_lang=en&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&search_type=used&distance=50&address=60173&marketZipError=false&style_flag=2&body_style=SEDAN&make=&start_year=2006&end_year=2010&min_price=&max_price=5000&seller_type=b&transmission=Manual&engine=&drive=&doors=&fuel=&max_mileage=45000&color=&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&keywords_display=&sort_type=priceDESC&body_code=8&certified=&advanced=y&highlightFirstMakeModel=&showZipError=y&default_sort=priceDESC&awsp=false&systime=&rdm=1254091007042

When I went to Autotrader.com and looked up your criteria regardless of zipcode, 8 vehicles showed to be available in the US and Canada and every one of them is either wrecked or has a salvage title. You need to tell your dad to ease up on his standards.

Q: taxed for a used car that i already paid for?
this letter came from the department of revenue.

according to this it says:

individual use tax return.
according to records provided to us by the secretary of state you recently purchased and registered the following vehicle at the above address in cook county, Illinois.

therefore said vehicle is subject to the 3/4 of 1% cook county use tax.

there’s more but it said see reverse side:

the cook county use tax ordinance went into effect dec, 95.

impose and collect a tax upon the use of tangible personal property which is purchased at retail and which is titled or registered by an agency of state government to a person at a location within cook county…

the use tax is equal to 3/4 of 1% of the purchase of the property.
example tax on a 10,000 car would be $75….

A: It’s a county tax that was not collected when you bought the car.

Q: what is bill of sale ? when you buy car from private seller. where do you get that bill of sale from ? ?
I saw some post talking about buying a car from private seller. Some guy mentioned “bill of sale”, that I need to have it and bring it to DMV. what is it like ? and where to get it from ? . any other tips are welcome, as I have never bought used car from private sellers. (btw I’m in illinois) Thanks
I’m very new to this forum. I don’t know how to add another post. anyway, should the receipt be stamped or something to make it look more legitimate ? (getting it notarized is expensive hehe)
and How much would a mechanic inspector cost ?
I remember my brother once bought the car, and they both went to DMV, the seller told the guy at DMV that he gave the car to my brother as a gift. how is it possible ? is it too risky to do that ? and then my brother just paid him in cash.
One last thing is, what documents relating to the car should I ask from the seller ? (I have no idea what each doc named). Thanks guys
Guys. how do I reply to your post ? instead of editing my first post

Anyway, what do you mean by “pass smog” ? Thanks
Guys. I have one more question. I have been searching for a car on the internet. I emailed the guy and mentioned about the vin, carfax, when he replied he didn’t mention anything about it, so I email him again asking for the vin, he never replied until now, do you think he’s just too lazy to look at it or he’s fishy ? thanks

A: A legally binding contract, I.E. the bill of sale, just has to be on a piece of notebook paper. You both sign, it states “2000 Chevy Blazer”, and the value. The DMV will accept that as the bill of sale. You get hand written receipts to this day in small shops. Actually, many private sales, have been “boosted” by the receipt. Example. Offering a car for $5K, they’ll sell it to you for $5,200 but give you the receipt for $1,000 and state “parts only” so you save on the taxes. Win, win for both parties.

Q: What Car Dealer, will give me a used car for a REALLY Good deal? (Obivously in Good Condition,60,000mileage)?
Its hard to find a good small suv, nowadays, and I was wondering if anyone knew a dealer that sold such vehicles at a good price. In Illinois by the way. I’m looking for a small suv, 5-6 years old, 60,000 mileage. But low price… like 9,000 – 10,000 – Price Range.

Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4 or something similar but good quality. No Chevy’s!
Price range actually im looking at is 6,800 to 7,500
Price range actually im looking at is 6,800 to 7,500

A: You are going to have to be a little more flexible on one of your requirements.

I see CR-V’s and RAV-4’s with the mileage and the price you are looking for every now and then, but they are 99-01’s, which is a little older than what you wanted.

If $7500 is the maximum you want to spend, you will need to be a little flexible. Make sure you have whatever you buy inspected by an independent mechanic before you sign anything.

Q: are JDM engines legal for street use in Illinois in an 86 car?
im planning to swap in 86 JDM Integra motor into my 86 Civic

A: The short answer is “yes” as long as you maintain the same emissions equipment that was on your original vehicle. The only thing that would make it illegal is if you started messing with or removing emissions equipment.

Q: I have Calif. drivers license, can I buy a car in Illinois for use there.?
I am dividing time between california and Illinois with permanent residence in california.

A: Yes you can buy a car in Illinois for use there.

About the only state the won’t give you registration without a local DL is Oregon. That’s because there’s no sales tax in OR. They’ll gladly give you the title but not the registration.

Q: Title problem: buy a car for my wife?
I live in Illinois now and want to buy a used car for my wife who is in another state(Iowa). I need to drive the car to my wife’s city, so I need a plate on the car. In whose name should I register the car? Can I apply for the title and plate for my wife without her presence at the Transportation Office? Or she can drive my car? She cannot drive a car now. Thank you!

A: some states you can get a temp plate usually for 30 days if you’re going to drive it to iowa both names to cover you talk to your ins agent also get on website or call trans office (yea i know could be awhile) she does have a license right

Q: Hi I have a car I want to sell to someone I work with, but they can’t pay the whole thing at once, any advice?
I just want to make sure I am covered if I sell him my used car and he can pay a certain amount and then pay me the rest every month.. any advice on how to do this so both are satisfied? If it makes any difference it is in the state of Illinois..

A: njWANTS new car, I bought a used car in Arkansas last month and saved some cash. Try visiting several used car lots in Illinois. http://www.findusedcardealer.com/Illinois-Used-Car-Dealers.html

Q: Driving with no insurance with a car the owner insured in Illinois?
Okay so this might sound kinda confusing but currently my car is being repaired and the person repairing my car is letting me use his until mine’s fixed. Currently I don’t have insurance, but he does. In Illinois, would his insurance cover me if I got into an accident or would I get in trouble for no insurance?

A: if his insurance allows licensed insured drivers to drive his car, yes, you would need to call his agent or look in the policy to see what it is. And do not mention he is being paid to work on your car, this implies a commercal interest. Just be cool, drive like a law abiding citizen and things should work out fine, same goes for your car and your insurance.

Q: How much does Car Insurance for a teenager cost?
How much is car insurance for a 15 ( starting drivers ed) year old girl if you are only a part time driver, like if you dont own a car you just use your parent’ car in Illinois? Like how much is added on to your parents insurance bill? and how much does it cost if you have your own car?

A: Proboly about 1136 a year. did u go to a thing called CC (were u in challenge b)

Q: Lemon Law/Manufacturer Buyback, I bought a used car, then found THAT on the title AFTER!!!!!!?

I have checked ALL my paperwork, read EVERYTHING (literally) and there is NO where in MY paperwork that says anything about it previously having the lemon title…….

A: I’m not sure about Illinois, but here in Arizona we are required to put the actual “lemon law buyback” sheet on the vehicle (at least for the first sale after the buy-back, and dealer auctions don’t count as the first sale).

And the finance officer is supposed to also tell you about it and you have to sign a form saying it’s been disclosed.

The lemon law will ALWAYS pop up. It’s a part of the permanent record.

Here’s the deal though. Go through your paperwork and look for the lemon law paperwork if it’s there. If the problem really is something as small as the paint I’d keep the car.

Here’s how the lemon law works:

Depending on the state there has to be 3 or 4 instances of the SAME problem that a dealership CANNOT resolve. The car is bought back and sent to the factory where they fix the problem and provide a SEPARATE warranty against that problem for 12 months.

So, if you did sign lemon law disclosure paperwork, and it really was just a paint problem (some people are real picky and will take advantage of laws when it’s not really a major issue, I’ve seen it) – keep the car! If it’s a good vehicle and you like it, don’t worry, you’re covered!

Good luck to you!
