Q: If I donate my old car, what are some alternatives in the Chicago area?
My car is 15 years old and runs, but needs a new windshield, tires, some repair and lots of TLC. I’ve heard that some pick up middlemen are scam artists, charities don’t always get the proceeds from the donation, and the donor might be left in limbo. Also, what do I need to do in preparation if I decide to donate it?
A: Check with the charitable organization to which you will be donating the vehicle. Then, clean it out of all personal belongings (including your insurance cards, registration and driver’s license!). Also remove any extras that you may have accumulated (tools, flashlights, first-aid kits or anything that you wish to keep.
When the organization sends a tow-truck, make sure you have removed the license plates and scraped the inspection sticker and registration sticker off the windshield and sign the title to the organization; make sure you’ve recorded the mileage properly.
Make sure you get a receipt for the vehicle (noting date, year, make, and model) as part of the donation MAY be income tax deductible.
Q: getting a new car, good opinions please.?
i currently own a 2004 mazda rx8 with 26000 miles, i am military station in kansas and it sucks when it snows, i get out this coming year and going back to chicago where is worst. i love my except during winter. i am thinking about trading the car in and getting a brand new mustang before i go back to chicago, but i dont know how good it would hold in chicago or if it will be worth getting rid of my rx8 for a mustang. what you guys think???
support the economy buy an american made car!!! that’s another reason why i wanna get a mustang.
A: Well trading rx8 for a mustang because of problems driving in the snow makes no sense. It will really change nothing. Go get an SUV. A ford or a chevy if you want to buy american.
Q: Car A, traveling from New York to Miami, has a speed of 25 m/s. Car B, traveling from New York to….?
Car A, traveling from New York to Miami, has a speed of 25 m/s. Car B, traveling from New York to Chicago, also has a speed of 25 m/s. Are their velocities equal?
A: Seeing as they are both going 25 m/s they are going at the same velocity. Only difference is the direction

Q: How To Get The Most Money For A Broken Down Car?
Its a 1995 Toyota Camry, the transmissions the only broken part but its not worth fixing. I want to get money out of it to put toward a new car, where would be the best place to take it? (I live in the outer suburbs of Chicago, idk if that helps..)
A: Worthless with a bad transmission. Cost of repairs could easily exceed the value of the car. Why would anyone want this car if they could spend less and get a similar car that is road worthy?
Before you junk it you could try running it in your local newspaper. But don’t expect to get more than a few hundred dollars for it and expect few bites. It someone makes an offer, don’t haggle, it may be your only chance.
If it doesn’t sell in a couple of weeks about all you can do is call your local salvage yard and see what they will give you for it.
Q: Where in Chicago can I get an alarm installed in my car?
I already own the alarm, I was gonna do it myself but I don’t have the time. I’d rather pay someone else to do it. Car is a 95 Ford T-bird, alarm is an OEM Ford one, doesn’t need a new harness, it just splices in like any aftermarket alarm. Also has remote doorlock function. I have all the installation instructions and all necessary parts. I’m in Hyde Park.
I already tried Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. and none of them will install the alarm unless they sold it to me.
A: the first answerer has a point, i live near chicago too and i have heard of people geting their alarm stolen, one guy had his lo-jack removed along with the radio.
but if you want to add one i’d recomend a Tweeter center, the one near me does a great job, but its always installer specific. so results may vary.
Q: How long is Chicago,IL to New Orleans, LA on Plane?
Im going Stand-By through American Airlines. We will then have to drive to foley,AL. How long is the Plane ride and then how long would the total be (adding the plane ride and the car drive.)
A: Chicage to New Orleans non-stop is 2 hours by air.
Foley, AL is almost 200 miles from the airport in New Orleans, which is about 4 hours of driving.
You don’t say if you have checked luggage or if you are renting a car/being met. However, the total trip will be 7 to 7 1/2 hours, counting the time after you land but before you drive away.
Hope you have a good trip!
Q: What’s a better new car choice? 2010 Nissan Maxima SV w/ Premium Pckg./Tech (Navi) or 2010 Acura TL 3.5 TECH?
I’m looking to buy one of these cars in the Chicago area in the next few months. Both are about $39,500 sticker price. The Maxima is faster, gets a little better mileage and is much better looking (exterior). The Acura TL has a much nicer interior, longer warranty and is more reliable. Thanks.
I’ve eliminated cars such as the Infiniti G37, Lexus IS250, BMW 3 series, Audi A4 and MB C series because I’m 6′3″ and I want a midsize car to comfortably hold me and my tall friends. Also, since I live in the snow belt, I won’t buy a rear-wheel drive car. I can’t go above $40K and don’t want a used car. Ihate the looks of the Accord sedan V6 and find the front seats very uncomfortable. The Altima leaves me flat. The 2010 Subaru Legacy is dull, too. The Mazda 6 has questionable reliability.
A: Well, you pick two interesting cars to consider when you are buying a car since you are paying close to $40,000 for basically a Front-Wheel drive car with a high output engine. Before any detail about the cars are listed, you should really consider the 2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan or 2010 Lexus IS350. You can get both with a Navigation and combine them with another package. The Nissan Maxima was built to be a Sport Sedan that is easy-to-drive and offers performance that many seek in a car. Unfortunately, they made the car FWD. You may ask what is so bad about FWD? FWD gives you subpar acceleration and handling. Lets put it this way, would you ride a bike pedaling the back wheels or front wheels? The Nissan Maxima does offer a fantastic engine but it is not much faster than the Acura TL. Everything the Nissan Maxima offers, the TL offers. The Acura TL has a higher resale value, the interior is made to suit everyone, there sound system is just fantastic, and it is an Acura. Though Nissan is known for major performance in their cars, they have really went the opposite way in the Nissan Maxima. This part of the answer may not give you your deciding choice so here are some Pros/Cons for the car:
2010 Acura TL 3.5L w/ Technology Package:
Pros:
+ All-new 3.5-liter V-6engine produces 280-hp, 3.5-liter, 260 ft-lb of torque courtesy of greater displacement and additional high-performance features like Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) on both the intake and exhaust valves, and a special high-flow dual exhaust system. With projected EPA fuel economy ratings of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, the 3.5L is also targeted to meet California’s stringent CARB LEV II ULEV emissions certification. The pièce de résistance on the Acura TL SH-AWD is now available on the Acura TL for the first time.
+ 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control gives you the fuel economy you need and performance you need
+

+ Bright HID projector-beam front headlights, pronounced wheel arches, a standard power moonroof and genuine stainless-steel body trim.
+ Featuring Acura’s new signature front grille, body sides defined by strong character lines, sweeping C-pillars and new LED taillights, the 2009 Acura TL is simultaneously Acura and yet wholly unique
Cons:
+ The MPG is not the greatest but what can you expect from a 3.5L engine
+ The car is quite expensive and there are cars out there with better features such as the RWD Infiniti G37 Sedan that will hit 60 in 5.6 seconds.
2010 Nissan Maxima SV w/ Premium Pacage & Tech Package:
Pros:
+ Inspired by the concurrent top secret development of the 2009 Nissan GT-R supercar, they threw away positioning words like “conservative” and “balanced” and concentrated instead on new concepts like “addictive performance,” “striking,” “commanding” and “powerful.”
+ The exterior design theme for the new Maxima is “Liquid Motion” – focusing on the flow of its powerful and beautiful surfaces, like the undulation of a wave. The look starts with Maxima’s aggressive stance and powerful fender volume, which is not unlike many exotic sports cars on the market today. This deeply sculpted body/fender treatment is seldom used for mass market vehicles because of the engineering and manufacturing complexity required to physically accomplish it. Maxima’s new stance is created by a slight reduction in wheelbase and overall length, along with a wider front and rear track
+ At the rear, Maxima features a new 12-LED L-shaped taillight design, with a pair of side marker bulbs for added visibility during night driving
+ The 2009 Nissan Maxima’s 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 is now rated at 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque (estimated), increases of 35 horsepower and 9 lb-ft of torque over the 2008 Maxima
+ In refining the award-winning VQ-series V6 for use in the new Maxima, engine development engineers focused on three areas – increasing air intake, increasing fuel burn efficiency and lowering exhaust backpressure
+ All 2009 Nissan Maximas come equipped with a revised Xtronic CVT™ with manual mode, tuned specifically for Maxima’s sporty driving character. The Maxima development team finessed the previous CVT design to improve responsiveness and strike a balance between sport and comfort, ultimately creating a transmission that provides a true synergy between engine and transmission, along with smooth, responsive and efficient operation
+ For drivers seeking the utmost in vehicle control, a new “Ds mode” (drive sport) has been added to the CVT for 2009. “Ds mode” is an electronic control logic, that enhances sport driving through increased acceleration feel with higher engine revolutions, automatic engine braking and maintaining engine speed during cornering
+ Add the available Premium Package to the 3.5 SV for: Dual Panel Moonroof with power retractable sunshades, rear-window power sunshade, rear-seat air conditioning and audio controls, premium mood lighting, 7.0″ VGA color display with RearView Monitor, 2 GB Music Box flash drive, USB connectivity and eucalyptus wood-tone trim
+ 8way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support, Digital Bose® audio system with AM/FM/in-dash 6-CD changer are among the features you get.
Cons:
+ FWD
+ It may be marketed as a performance sedan but a Honda Accord EX-L V6 has almost the same 0-60 time.
+ The car is way too expensive and gives you very little
+ Car is awkwardly shaped
It would be a good decision to look into other sedan like the Infiniti G37, Lexus IS350 or ES350, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, etc..

Q: Would it cost more to rent a car or buy a plane ticket?
Would it cost more to drive FROM New York TO Chicago in a rented car or just to buy a plane ticket? I would be staying a week and at a friends house, no hotel.
A: Depends….
If you are just counting cost of rent with plane ticket then renting will be cheaper…. but
If you are driving from New York to Chicago then you need to add cost of gas, you need to add cost of room charge if you take a break, you need to add resturant charges on the road.
The more people are sharing the car it will be cheaper by car.
Q: Is the New Volkswagon Rabbit a Girly Car?
Here is a picture:
http://www.cars.com/features/autoshows/2006/chicago/coverage/images/07_VW_Golf_frontangle_st_430.jpg
Is this a girly car? My friend has one and found it to be girly when I first saw it. My cousin also thinks its kind of girly. What do you think?
A: it is definately girly. get a pick-up and be a real man
Q: Is there a car (not a minivan) that will seat 6?
We have four kids and a large conversion van. My husband wrecked his car last night and we now need a new car. We would like a car that will fit everyone, so we are never stuck without transportation. He has a long commute, so we would rather not get a minivan. Any ideas? We live in Chicago, so it needs to be a car we can purchase here in the US. Thanks!
A: Hi, Ford and GM still make cars with front bench seats that you can use to put three people in each row of the car, if you want a car for those few times when you need to fit six. The Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town car have seating for six, and the GM makes the Cadillac DTS.
Otherwise, a minivan really is the best choice, but if you don’t want one, an SUV with seven seat capacity is going to be as close as you can get – they tend to go from 5 seat to 7 seat these days.
There are lots of SUVs that will seat 7, although with third-row seating. Those third row seats are usually only good for small kids, so if your family is more grown up, it will not be a pleasant ride.
The Audi Q7 is the latest greatest, but it huge and expensive. The Chevy Suburban, Ford Expedition, and Mazda CX-9 are also good large SUVs that just got new designs.
Other nice choices are the Cadillax SRX, which is a mid size SUV, and the Mazda CX-7, Ford Fusion, and Acura MDX.
There are tons of SUVs to choose form – try http://www.edmunds.com and look at the SUVs to get a better idea.
Q: i want to buy a new car?
i live in Chicago and the have crazy winters. i am 21 years old and want a car. i was thinking 05 EVO or the 07 maxima. my price range is about 20-22k. can anyone make any suggestions? are there other good cars for that price range?
im looking for something sporty with power and good turning, suspension
A: You could get a new Honda Civic for about this price. I have one and am from Canada – it drives awesome in the winter.
My family has 7 Hondas for 4 people (we also have motorcycles).
They are quality cars. The Japanese have really raised the standards on their cars. Test drive one.
Toyota Corolla is also a nice reliable car. It is also a bit cheaper than the civic. I found that the handling on the civic was tighter and it had a better pickup (more horsepower). but the corolla is still a smart choice.
My boyfriends mom had a maxima… it was alright, but really no comparison to the civic. also a matter of preference.
Test drive as many as you can and see what feels right.
Q: Do you really need a car in Los Angeles?
I always hear people say that you can live in Chicago and New York City without a car, but not L.A. Why is this? Doesn’t Los Angeles have a vast bus system?
A: Unlike eastern cities where things are built “upward”, in Los Angeles they are built “outward”. The Los Angeles metropolitan area is roughly 50 miles wide by 110 miles long. Yes, you can get along without a car, but life is much easier with one. After a while it gets tiresome dragging 6 bags of groceries on and off city buses.
Q: How do I get from New York to Chicago?
I’m going to be in New York early Saturday afternoon and I’m trying to get back to Chicago (where my car’s parked), without traveling all day. I can’t find ANY flights direct from NY MacArthur, JFK, or Newark to Chicago Midway.
Flying to O’Hare really isn’t an option unless there’s a particularly good way to get from the airport to Millenium Station (in Chicago).
Here’s what I’m shooting for….. looking to get to Chicago as quickly as possible, without scraping my @ss out of bed before noon on Saturday.
So far my best option is a bus from NY to Philadelphia, then a flight via Southwest to Chicago Midway. Anyone have any better ideas? Thanks.
I tried the Travelocity search, and no flights came up without requiring a connection somewhere, and they were all at least 6 hours or so, which is definitely longer than a bus to Philly.
FYI, my car’s at the 93rd (South Chicago) Metra Station.
A: Of course there’s a particularly good way to get from the airport to Millenium Station (in Chicago).
Here’s what you do.
Take the Blue Line from O’Hare and exit at Washington. This is really easy. EVERY train from O’Hare is going the same direction and will stop at Washington. From there, it’s a five minute walk to the Millennium Park Train Station. Simply walk a block north to Randolph, take a right and follow Randolph to Michigan: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=dearborn+and+washington&daddr=Randolph+St.+Metra+%4041.884366,-87.623087&hl=en&geocode=%3BFc4afwIdUfrG-g&mra=ls&dirflg=w&sll=41.883825,-87.62627&sspn=0.003978,0.006866&ie=UTF8&ll=41.883852,-87.626299&spn=0.003978,0.006866&z=17 where you’ll see that train station.
I’m sorry to put it this way, but it would be completely retarded not to take the first flight into O’Hare because taking a connecting flight into Midway is going to take so much longer than just flying directly into O’Hare and taking the Blue Line into the Loop.
Q: The new Honda hydrogen powered car?
Question,
In a recent news cast reported by FOX CHICAGO the new hydrogen powered vehical by Honda is to be ariving in the U.S by sometime this year. My question is why only 200 units and why are the uper class getting first shot at getting them?? The chances of them traving more than 30 miles to work are far fetch the car will most likly sit next to the Porsha and BMW wile the cruze around in there HUMMER with 25′inch rims and besides they make up a small percent make of the hard working ameicans that power our working economy talk about the system being backwards. Just when you think a company is trying to do something right for both the enviorment and the consummer they go out and do something like this.
Oh and why is it that California gets this car first? There are 49 other states.
A: California first? Probably because that’s the best market for cars worldwide. It also may have something to do with, “…There are just 61 hydrogen fueling stations in the country, compared with 180,000 gas stations, and only 25 hydrogen stations in California.” (LA Times article below) ie, California has over 40% of all hydrogen fueling stations in the country.
“Honda says that although some of its hydrogen cars will go to celebrities, it will allocate the bulk of them — 200 over the next three years — to people who can’t be found in the Internet Movie Database. “The last thing we’d want is for the car to be cubbyholed as something just for the rich and famous,” said Stephen Ellis, Honda’s manager of fuel cell marketing.”
“Aside from generating buzz, the automakers expect to use the loaners to gather information about the cars to refine the technology. GM’s program puts most of its vehicles in the hands of regular drivers and doesn’t charge for the loan. There’s a waiting list of about 8,000 people.”
