Q: is it possable to have a car with illanois plates with a new york drivers licence?
i have a friend who lives in new york and has an apartment in chicago, he has one car in ny and one in chicago the one in chicago has chicago plates the one in ny has ny plates he only has one ny licence is that ok

A: Legality will depend on the state. From my experience, two of three should be the same i.e. where you are now, licensed to drive in what state, and license plate on the vehicle. If at least two did not match, it would warrant deeper inquiry of the driver.

Q: Im from chicago, If i lost my car registration where do I get a new one?

A: How do I apply for a duplicate registration card?
Submit an Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (VSD 190) to:
Secretary of State
Vehicle Services Department
501 S. 2nd. St., Room 011
Springfield, IL 62756-6666.

You may also visit your nearest Secretary of State facility. For duplicate fees, refer to the basic fees page.

See site below for links.

Q: 2008 Maxima-since I got a new intake in my car, do I need to have my ECU re-flashed? If so where, near Chicago?

A: No, you’re fine. Unless you make some other real modifications, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Enjoy the new CAI :)

BTW, this wont void the warrenty unless they prove whatever went wrong was caused by the intake. I also have a nissan (well, a g35, but you get the idea…). The idea of voiding the warrenty has been discussed in legnth at the G forum.

Q: How easy is it to live in New Orleans without a car?
I am not very fond of cars or driving and would like to relocate to a gay-friendly American city where public transportation, bikes and walking will get me just about anyplace I need to go in the city.

Since Manhattan and San Francisco are too pricey … and Chicago is too cold, I was considering New Orleans.

If I lived in the French Quarter/CBD/Garden District, is a “car free” lifestyle possible?

Or is a professional GWM considered a complete freak (or loser) in NOLA if they don’t own a car?

Thanks

A: There’s a certain kind of folk who live in the quarter : ) Depending on where you work you could manage it easily. Walking or biking in the summer months, and by summer months I mean like… April – October, can be rough because of the heat and humidity, the trolley and bus can get you where you want to go. They can also get you places you definitely do not want to go so be careful to learn where is safe and where isn’t.

New Orleans is GLBT friendly in general, the quarter even more so. Garden District is probably a little farther than you want to be, again depending on where you find a job.

New Orleans does have a pretty high crime rate right now so you may want to look into it carefully before moving, but you’d be welcomed by the vast majority of people.

Good luck to you.

Q: Car insurance?
about how much is car insurance for:
-16 year old Male
-from the suburbs of chicago
-new car (‘06)

A: there is no way you can get a quote from anyone on here…just know that the car insurance will be really expensive…try this..

Q: Are there any car rentals allowed in New York City with debit card?
I was able to rent a car withAlamo while in Chicago on 8-10 thru 12th. I gave them proof of my return ticket to Houston and my debit card for deposit. Now I am going to NYC and it seems no locations there accept this form of deposit.

A: Cheap Car Rentals in New York City – AAMCAR
http://www.aamcar.com/policies.php
Their policy on debit cards: Aamcar Discount car rental gladly accepts debit cards to rent a car in NY

Q: is it safe to drive from miami to chicago in a car?
the car is a brand new 2007 civic but still… is it good for the car? I’m just paranoid. Its got almost 4,000 miles on it

A: Yes! going on driving trips is great fun. you are extremely paranoid. The car can handle it easily.

Q: Do you need a car to get around if you live in San Francisco?
Are there a lot of people in San Francisco who choose not to own cars, like in Chicago or New York? What kind of public transportation is there. If I don’t have a car, could I at least get around with just a motorcycle? Is it bearable to walk during the winter time?

A: I, like a lot of other San Franciscans, live quite comfortably without a car. I’ve had a car in the past, prefer not to actually.

Public transport is abundant. Muni runs trolleys, buses, light rail, and of course cable cars. To get to the suburbs there is BART to East Bay, as well as AC transit and Bay Point Ferries. The South Bay has SMT buses and Caltrain. Marin is served by Golden Gate Transit which uses buses and Ferries.

A cycle is a great way to get around, easy to park, You might want to even consider a bike, the city has over 50 miles of bike lanes and many of the buses are equipped with bike racks. You can also take bikes on Caltrain, BART and the ferries if you plan to travel to the East Bay, the South Bay or Marin.

Weather here is pretty good year round though Dec-Feb can be wet. SF has a tradition of people who walk to/from work. The city is compact and beautiful so many folks take advantage of that.

You can live quite well without a car. If you have a reoccurring need for a car you may want to check into one of the The City’s care share programs.

Q: PHYSICS! HELP! Car A traveling from New York to Walt Disney Word has a speed of 25 m/s. Car B traveling from?
Car A traveling from New York to Walt Disney Word has a speed of 25 m/s. Car B traveling from New York to Chicago also has a speed of 25 m/s. Are their velocities equal? Explain.

A: Their velocities are NOT equal. The other answer mixed up speed and velocity. Velocity includes magnitude and direction. Speed is just magnitude.
The magnitudes of both velocities (speed) are equal, but their directions are not. Since the question is regarding the velocities in general and not the magnitudes, the velocities are not equal.

Q: Should I spend $99 for new plates for my car? Only driving it one day 700 miles Chicago to Virginia.?
The plates stand out because they are yellow livery plates. They expired on Dec. 31. I will be going through I-Pass Lanes on the toll roads as well. Also, I will probably have to park the car outside for one night when I get there. I hate to spend that much just to drive it one day, but I don’t know what are the risks? If I don’t speed, will I be ok? Would they be likely to impound the car if I’m stopped?

A: some states will offer a temporary registration, (like 15 days) for a much reduced fee. I dont know about yours, but mine does.
You may still be stopped, but you will be legal. You will probably have to remove the old plates though.

Q: I have to buy a new car, any suggestions?
Im thinking about a Maxima or Altima. Im in chicago, anyone know a great place to go? Also whats better, leasing or buying? Please give me the pros and cons….

A: I have a suggestion, don’t post it in Book & Authors, and you might actually get a response. Most of us are probably book nerds and, therefore, don’t know anything about cars!

Q: Just bought a car in Chicago, how can I get both front/back license plates on the same day?
Hi guys! I just bought a used car from a dealer. How can I get my new plates (from & back) on the same day? Where can I go for this? Thanks!

A: I think the DMV is open till 7:30, but then again im in New Jersey, the rules might differ in your state.

Basically over here when you register a car in your name at the DMV you get the plates and everything.

Remember, you have X amount of days to register your car and pay the state taxes (When I bought a car in Pennsylvania and took it to NJ It came with plates that are good for 30 days) so in effect I have 30 days to pay taxes and registration fee’s.

Q: Car A travels from NYC to Miami at a speed of 25 m/s. Car B travels from NYC to Chicago, also at 25 m/s. Are v?
Car A travels from New York to Miami at a speed of 25 m/s. Car B travels from New York to Chicago, also at a speed of 25 m/s. Are the velocities of the cars equal? Explain.

A: No. Because the directions are different. The speed of the two cars is the same, but not the velocity. (You will note that you have used the word speed in your question). For the velocity to be equal, they cars must travel at the same speed in exactly the same direction, for exactly the same displacement.

The only exception to this would be if both vehicles finished up at exactly their common starting point, and then the average velocity of both cars would be zero.

Q: Is there a calculator for determining the extra fees (tax, title, registration fees) with new car?
We live in Chicago Illinois. Good luck.
-Andrew

(Is there a general once, based on AVERAGES? And such)
I want one where you could type in the price of the car, and it will tell you how much the total will be (based on averages, maybe). good luck.
-Andrew

A: I’m not sure about Illinois but here is Cali, you need to multiply the price of the vehicle by 10%. That is everything from taxes to dealership fees…. Good luck!

Q: need a new car for $2k or less?
I need a new car desperatly and don’t know where to get one. I have no credit and no co-signer. I really only want a cheap car that I can pay off quick but will still last for longer than a year. I’m in chicago…any ideas?
I dont mean a NEW car…a used one. and I dont really have the cash to pay in full

A: find a friend selling a car and talk him into carrying the loan :)
